In the Philippines and across the world, big corporations are taking over vast tracts of land to build factory farms, solar power plants, or hotels.
But across the country and beyond, communities have also been defending themselves against dispossession and the accelerating enclosure of the global commons. Among them are the landless farmers and fisherfolk of Sicogon who have been engaged in a decades-long struggle against one of the country’s biggest conglomerates, Ayala Corporation, and its agents in government.
Here, we share their inspiring story of resistance for other communities to learn from. What can their long struggle for land reform, food sovereignty, and climate justice teach us about how to fight back against landgrabbing? How do we work together to build a world built on sharing the world’s resources and caring for each other?
